The "Kabiuk" farm was founded in 1864 by the vali of Russe Midhad pasha as a national stud farm in the Ottoman Empire with the main purpose of providing ridable horses for the army in the Balkans. For a short time the stud farm increases the ammount of horses. During the Russo-Turkish War the horses are lead away from it and the stud is left empty. Due to the necessity of horses for the bulgarian army the farm is reopened in 1883. Failure in the production of horses leads to closing the farm again after 4 years. The true reopening of the farm starts in 1894 as a "National stud farm, warehouse for stallions and horse repair depot Kabiuk".
From the very beginning additional sections are introduced in the farm such as bovine-breeding, sheep-breeding, pig-breeding and chicken-breeding sections, mainly to satisfy personal needs, but later formed as branch departments. Because of this in 1911 the stud farm is renamed a National factory for livestock and reproduction depot. In the years after World War II the stud farm continues it's work under the name National agricultural farm "Vasil Kolarov". In 1963 in is added to the list in the Agricultural academy.
The main focus of the farm's activities is the development of horse-breeding and sheep-breeding, preserving endangered breeds of bovine and sheep in the existing genetic reserve. The farm's activities are subsidized by the country.
