The "Founders of the Bulgarian Nation" monument depicts important moments of bulgarian history from the VIIth to the Xth century. It is built from 8 concrete bodies, forming two halls. The composition is formed by figures of the bulgarian rulers Asparuh, Tervel, Krum, Omurtag, Boris I and Simeon I. In the "Golden century" hall aside from the Simeon statue are also those of Kliment, Naum and Angelarii, aristocrats and warriors. The mosaic before the composition of Simeon was made by Simeon Venov and Vladislav Paskalev. Every one of the bodies, on which the mosaic was mounted, is under a different angle. The composition represents the idea of the gradual development of the nation. The mosaic are made from two equal elements: the figures are combined with the dominating above them family composition. Depicted in the first panel is runic scripture, "lines and notches" that the bulgars used, in which the symbol of Tangra can be found. On the second panel is the glagolithic aplhabet and on the third one is the cyrillic alphabet. The composition is completed by the Lion symbol, located 52 meters high. It weighs 1000 tons and is made of 2000 elements of darker granite. Behind it's tail is a stylized butterfly. In asian culture it is a symbol of longevity. The idea is that as it changes during it's metamorphosis so does in it's development the Bulgarian Nation go through rise and fall. The connection between the city and the monument is established through 1300 steps, lit in the night by tall, spiral-shaped bodies. On different lenghts are formed 13 platforms.
