Remains of the ancient Shumen fortress are located 3 kilometers from the centre of today's city Shumen. It is said that the name of the city comes from the name of Tzar Simeon Veliki (the Great), with some changes.

The fortress was likely built by the thracians and was rebuilt by romans, byzantians and bulgarians. Historians believe, that the castle is 3200 years old, making it one of the oldest in the country's territory.

Until XV the city was found behind the fortress walls, a complicated network of buildings and warmachines. The fortification played an important role during the time of the Second Bulgarian Nation. The castle still existed in the first years of the Ottoman conquest. In 1444 the crusaders of Vladislav III Jagelo destroy and burn it.

Today the remains of the fortress may be the most well studied ancient remains in the country. It is displayed as an open museum. Research has uncovered important facts about the everyday life and warfare of bulgarians in the Medieval era.
